THE ILLUMINATI IS ONE OF THE MOST INFAMOUS SECRET SOCIETIES IN CONSPIRACY LORE, OFTEN PORTRAYED AS A SHADOWY GROUP CONTROLLING WORLD EVETNS. HOWEVER , ITS REAL HISTORY IS VERY DIFFICULT FORM THE MYTHS . 

FOUNDING AND PURPOSE:

  • Illuminati was founded on may1,1776 , in Ingolstadt, Bavaria (now Germany) by Adam Weishaupt, a professor of canon law.
  • Original name: "Order of the illuminati" (illuminatenorden in German).
  • Goal: To oppose religious and political oppression, promote Enlightenment ideals(reason ,secularism ,science), and reduce the influence of the Catholic Church and monarchies.
STRUCTURE AND MEMBERSHIP:
  • Organized like the freemasons ( a society Weishaupt initially admired but later sought to reform).
  • Members were educated elites-- lawyers , professor and progressive thinkers .
  • Used secret codes, initiation rites , and ranks ( e.g," Minerval", " illuminati Dirigens")
DOWNFALL AND SUPPRESSION:
  • By the 1780s, the group grew to about 2000 members but faced opposition from Bavarian authorities.
  • In 1785, the government banned all secret societies , including the illuminati, after seizing documents that exposed their activities.
  • The group disbanded and faded into obscurity.
